on a cold and frosty morning....

Yesterdays pic of the Alf and Les Gars on the track - Lolo wasnt up for being photgraphed .... So we really really liked the cold weather - after the vet telling me "les gars" need more coat they are pretty much naked 24/7 (though I did wuss out and put a thermatex on on the -5 nights!) but they are holding up pretty well - ears are warm and they seem tres contente - Keeping them eating is the trick : the more their bodies process the more heat they can generate in the hind gut.... but todays rain is draining, mud everywhere and the fields are mudpits .... please come back the freezing cold ...!!

Winter Spa treatment for tack....

Of all the things I could post today its about tack!  With this cold spell chilling everything in its way one of the things Jack Frost will have no qualms messing with is your tack - just as the moisture is taken out of the air that makes our skin so dry in these conditions, the same happens to our beloved tack!   So as a bit of preventative maintenance, love treat your tack to a day at the spa and give it a good clean, with nice warm water to supple the leather and help remove all the grit n grime and get into all those nooks and crannies and if your done quite feel prepared to do a full dismantle then at least undo all the buckles and fixins to get at those hard to get to dust and muck accumilating spots.... you'll be pleased you did and your tack will be grateful for the attention!  and if you dont believe me then I challenge you to not put moisturiser on your face for a couple of days and see how wrinkly it gets!!

Life in the fast lane!

SirAlf taking another walk up the track!
Duke really really loves MrWunderPants
the lovers SirAlf and Lolo on the track!
well, the track went up last week - already the boys and girls are making full use of it ... and are using it as an extended non-automated horse walker which is great, especially as Alf is recovering from a suspensory injury and needs super light exercise on straight lines and Lolo a lady in her prime also needs to be moving !   Duke n Wunder are somewhere different every time I go out and its big enough for everyone to have their own space - The wear the horses are making on the track is showing (well it has been raining!) but we'd rather have horses moving around and the whole point of track was to have somewhere to trash over the winter rather than trash a field where the horses are just loafing might as well be in their stables!   Here are a few pics of our latest lovers Alf and Lolo and Duke trying to give Wudner a sloppy smacker.

Sir Alf doing the Do!

Fabulous new arrivals of Alf and Ali - both a bit posh for our little yard being Prix St George level peeps but since Ali seems quite lovely and he is obviously a TopBay we'd thought we'd let them in!  Here are a couple of pics of Sir Alf in action showing us how its done .... and just to prove its not just talk about how gorgeous he is (17hhShire/TB cross!) Here is further evidence of him being wooooed by one of Fairview's little ladies, SunnyBunnyBean.  Well, who can blame her, he is quite delicious from the tips of his toes up to the tips of his ears well for those that can reach up there ....

Paddock Paradise!

To manage and improve the grazing at Fairview we are putting in a track system for the winter turn out - I found this interesting page that I pasted from someone else who has a similar sized paddock and took the time to do some tests "tracking" their horses movements - with some interesting results - making the system work as a rather large hrose walker! :

Tracking Movement:

So how do you know it’s working?  The biggest comment I get from folks is… “but my horse has run-in board and is kept in a large pasture they can move all the time.”  I tell them that’s a great start but unfortunately the horse is still on lamanitic grass and though you think they are moving all the time so far my findings show they really don’t!  How do I know?  By GPS tracking of course!

3 Acre Grass Turnout (good):
  • Time: 12.5 hours
  • Distance: 2.2 miles
  • Speed: never went faster than a walk
================================================================
Feeding SMHN on the Track (better):
  • Time: 11.5 hrs
  • Distance: 3.3 miles
  • Speed: 10x during the day was at a strong trot or canter
================================================================
Spreading Hay Around the Track (best):
  • Time: 8hrs
  • Distance: 3 miles
  • Speed: 8x during the day was at a strong trot or canter
